How To Do A Perfect French Manicure (and flaunt those nails!)

Admit it: you just love French manicure. Who could resist those natural-looking, pale pink fingernails tipped with white polish? You see Reese Witherspoon walk down the red carpet, nails done in perfect French manicure and you immediately think you cannot afford it.

You may be partly right, because they are quite expensive when done at nail salons. Good news though, you can do this at home! All it takes is a little creativity and a lot of patience.

A helpful tip to start things off: have your nails grow longer. Once you have achieved the desired length, you may trim it so that the tips are even, or slightly curved. You can then start doing your own fancy nails.

Here are the very basic steps on how to do a perfect French manicure:

  1. Wash your hands, clean your nails and soak them in warm water for a few minutes. Then using a cotton bowl soaked in nail polish remover, wipe off any old nail polish prior to doing your own French manicure.
  2. Once the water has softened your skin, gently push back the cuticles so they are all even with each other. Use an orangewood stick when doing this.
  3. Shape your nails evenly using nail clippers, beauty scissors or a nail file.
  4. You may start to apply a base coat to each of your fingernails. A color-less polish is usually used as a base coat.
  5. With a steady hand, carefully paint only the tip of each nail with a white nail polish. A second coat may be applied depending on the thickness of the nail polish. Allow polish to dry between coats. For easier application of the white tips, you can buy guide tips being sold on some beauty shops. This covers the lower portion of your nails while exposing the tips for easier application of nail polish.
  6. Once the tips have dried, paint the entire nail with a slightly transparent pink or nude colored nail polish. A second coat may be necessary depending again on the thickness of the nail polish. Allow nails to dry thoroughly.
  7. As a finishing touch, apply a clear topcoat to protect your new do-it-yourself French manicure. Make an effort to paint a clear coat on each night to lengthen the manicure's lifespan.
  8. Now that you have perfected your French manicure, how about doing the same for your toenails?

So if you are bored on a weekend or you haven't got a date on a Friday night, why not do something productive by doing your own nails? At least you can save on those extra dollars you spend at the nail salon. You may even buy French manicure kits at the beauty section of a drug store or any beauty shops. The set should at least contain a nail polish in white, pink or beige topcoat. Some manicure sets contain sticky nail guides and this makes the process a lot easier by allowing you to place the guides on each nail individually. Who knows, you might perfect this craft and turn this into a part time job by doing the nails of your family and friends?
