How Sugaring Hair Removal Method Works

Completely Natural Method For Hair Removal

By Dinesh Junoon

Sugaring is a completely natural method for hair removal. Sugaring is very similar to waxing, but in sugaring instead of wax, a solution composed of sugar, water and lemon juice is used after warming it up. After warming the paste, it is spread thinly over the skin, mimicking the hair growth direction. Then by using a cloth the paste is pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth. Sugaring is a very advantageous method as it is very inexpensive and can be done at home. Also unlike the wax, the sugar tends to stick to the hairs only, not the skin. It is very less painful compared to waxing.

Sugaring is an ancient method used for removing the unwanted hairs. Sugaring is gaining popularity now because the results are similar to waxing. Still, there are some differences between the sugaring and waxing like the sugar is only slightly warmed (never reaching the same high temperature as wax). So it causes very less skin irritation. The sugar sticks only to the hairs, not to the skin. So it causes very less discomfort. The applying process is the same as of waxing. Sugaring involves applying warm sugar to the skin and then removed with the strips.

Sugaring Paste Recipe

It requires 2 cups of sugar, 1/4 cup lemon or lime juice (vinegar can also be used) and 1/4 cup water.

All the ingredients are combined and warmed over medium-high heat, stirring often. The flame is reduced for about 15 minutes until the paste turned a rich amber color. The saucepan should be lifted off the heat at regular intervals, so that the bubbles will calm down and one can keep a check on the color of the paste. It is important to heat the mixture long enough. Otherwise it creates problems when it is used.

How to Use - Once the paste is completely cooled, the sugaring paste can be applied directly on the hair by spreading it in a thin layer and then it is pulled off. The paste can be either removed with a muslin strip or with fingers.

Amount of Paste- If the hairs are removed from the legs or another large area like back or chest, a large amount of paste is required. It is advisable to use the half of the mixture at a time, and the second half can be re-cooled while using the other half. For areas like eyebrows, facial hair and bikini line small amount of paste is applied. The sugaring paste adheres best to hair that is at least 1/4 inch long.

Tips and Suggestions for using Sugaring

Before the use of Sugaring, the hair must be clean and dry.
All creams and oils should be removed before the use of sugaring.
The sugaring paste is applied in the hair growth direction.
At the time of pressing the cotton strip on top of the paste, a small section at the end is left freely. It makes the pulling.
If a spatula is used, the edge should be used instead of the flat side. This ensures a very thin layer is applied.
Pull the strip back sharply against the direction of the hair growth. Do not lift the strip up or out away from the skin.
The skin should be held firmly with one hand while pulling the strip back sharply with another hand.
The paste should be just warm using either microwave or oven. It should not be hot, as it may burn the skin.
If hot water is used for warming the paste container, the water should be allowed into the paste because the paste is water-soluble and it is will spoiled if the water gets in.

Sugaring Advantages - Sugaring is natural, so there is no chemical. It does not stick to the skin like the wax. It does not cause much pain. The results are long.

Sugaring Disadvantages - It is hard to get the exact right consistency if the paste is made on own. The process is really messy and sometimes the hair breaks off at the surface rather than coming out at the root.
