For women, too much body hair can really hurt

Hair removal techniques tend to be painful on both the skin and the pocketbook

Summary of Diane Mapes article on msnbc.com Full article here

There are women, who spend half their life waxing and shaving, just because they have body hair pretty much from head to toe. To avoid spending ridiculous amount of time on hair-elimination, some of them decide to try laser hair removal. But so-called full treatment can cost even $10,000 and take few years of taking laser treatment sessions.

However, in our society, obsessed by smooth and hairless skin, letting nature take its course can be problematic and lead to lower self-esteem. Many women need to remove hairs not only from legs and underarms, but also from their hands, arms, chest, stomach, neck, back, face, and the whole intimate region.

Not surprisingly, there are as many ways to get rid of hair as there are places to grow it. While millions have turned to laser or waxing, others have opted for sugaring (hair removal method that uses a sugar paste instead of wax) or threading (a technique in which a cotton thread is rolled over unwanted hairs to pluck them out).

But no method of body hair removal is perfect. For example, laser can be less effective with certain skin and hair types. And many hair removal techniques can be a pain - both literally and financially. In 2007, the average price for a one-to-two-hour laser-hair-removal session was $387, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Even waxing, while wildly popular, can carry health risks, especially if the technician fails to use proper hygiene or if a person is allergic to the product.
