Hair care: How to prevent and deal with split ends?

Is the trimming the only way for healthy looking hair?

The easiest way to get rid off split ends that already appeared is to trim them - it will make your hair look healthy. However, there is also a lot of ways to protect hair from damaging and becoming frayed.

  • Remember that hot air tends to harm the hair structure, so it is better to dry your hair with moderately warm air, and to finish with cool air blow. Of course, you should adjust the temperature of the air blow to your personal preferences and to the temperature outside in order not to get cold (that is much worse that split ends ;). If there is such a possibility, it is the best to leave your hair dry naturally, without hair-drier.
  • Wet hair are subjected to get damaged easily. To prevent that, it should be washed gently. If you have long hair, try not to mess it up while washing - it should be much easier to brush it out if hairs are not disheveled, so the hair structure won't be harmed severely.
  • After cleaning your hair, dry it first with a towel (remember – avoid harsh moves ), and then comb it through. It would be great if you could use a comb with big rounded tooth that are wide apart or brush with soft protective bristles (you may like to use natural, wooden brushes).
  • A tip from hair stylist: When combing long and medium-long hair, start from the ends layer, and when they are ready (not ruffled), comb all hair length. This will make it easier to brush your hair without damaging it and without tousling it.
  • If you trim or cut your hair, make sure to use professional, sharp scissors, that will cut the hair without fraying it (like most of professional hairdressers do). In case you prefer to trim hair yourself, you can buy good hair scissors in a hairdresser supply store on in specialist shops (search google for a term "professional hair scissors" to learn more). If you trim your hair with blunt scissors, split ends appear soon after the treatment.
  • You should remember also that hair can be damaged severely by impropriate use of home-dying kits or permanent wave products.
  • If you dye, perm or apply another treatments that tends to weaken your hair, make sure to let your hair "have a rest" between those treatments. For example: new hair colour - then 2 weeks pause - then permanent wave. This will minimize the harmful effect for your hair in case you decide to apply those treatments.

Following those simple hair care tips will help you to prevent hair damage, diminish the amount of split ends and to promote the health of your hair.
